Religious Effort to Assist and Care for the Homeless, Inc.
Our mission is to "respond out of compassion to people in need." Reach of Washington County is a faith-based, non-profit organization birthed in 1990 when a group of compassionate people agreed to make themselves available 24 hours a day for emergencies such as motel placements for homeless families, food, prescription medication and more. We have come a long way since those humble beginnings. We now partner with the faith and business community to operate a year-round Day Resource Center where county residents facing housing crises or having other urgent needs can come for resources, referrals and a listening ear. With the help of local faith groups and more than 1600 volunteers we run a Cold Weather Shelter for homeless adults complete with case management to help clients move from homelessness to self sufficiency. Reach also leads the Financial Education Partnership of Washington County. In the last two years 536 households have taken classes and created budgets. We also track increases in assets, decreased debt, income tax filing and opening of bank accounts. More than 60 participants have participated in the Open Table program, walking alongside seven households for one year to help each household achieve their goals. The impact of having a caring community as a safety net has transformed those being served as well as the volunteers.
